The John W. McNeill, III Performing Arts Fund provides the Maysville community
with funding for a variety of musical and other performances.
BACKGROUND
In late December, 2009, the Maysville area
lost one of its strongest supporters with the untimely passing of John
W. McNeill, III. An attorney, past Circuit Court judge, civic
leader, and talented musician at the organ and piano, John McNeill was
also a member of the Hayswood Foundation
Board of Directors at the time
of his death. John had been instrumental in the early formation of
the Foundation, as well as its development over the years, having served
as a director for many years, and having filled many officer positions.
John's guidance was a key factor in the creation of the Foundation's first, and
largest, scholarship program: the G. L. & Elsie H. Downing Scholarship.
In 2010, the Foundation Board set aside
$200,000 as the initial funding for a memorial program to honor John McNeill's
many years of service to the Foundation, and to the Maysville community.
The John W. McNeill, III Music Series Fund provides finanical assistance
to bring musical performances to Maysville, exposing the community to a
wide variety of musical styles including jazz, bluegrass, folk, pop,
spiritual, and classical. The Foundation is aided by a committee
composed of community leaders in the arts to select and schedule the
performers, and The Maysville Players to organize and conduct the
events.
The keystone event of each event year has been a performance by a
finalist in the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. A truly
unique opportunity for a town the size of Maysville, this concert
features talented pianists that normally perform only in the most
prestigious concert halls around the world.
